Twirling Candy’s Margarita Girl Steps Up in Class to Claim Las Flores at Santa Anita

She was a bridesmaid on four occasions before she broke her maiden last out, and now Margarita Girl (Twirling Candy) has quickly left that behind her, collecting her first black-type of any kind in the GIII Las Flores Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Breaking well to watch the race unfold as Thermal (Nyquist) set the tempo, she enjoyed a rail trip behind that leader through an opening quarter in :21.74 and four furlongs in :44.11. No Bad Beats (Midnight Storm) took the race to the early leader coming off the bend, and struck the front as Margarita Girl began uncorking her rally via the overland route. That pair quickly pulled away from a closing Ooty (Arg) (Dabster) on the rail, and the eventual winner overhauled her challenger inside the final sixteenth to score.

The final time was 1:09.19.
