This weekend’s notable US-bred activity in Japan is confined to Saturday. In today’s installment in this continuing series, we take a look at the horses of interest running at Hanshin Racecourse, including the return to the races of the admirably consistent Shivaji (First Samurai) and of Avance (Uncle Mo), who seeks to retain his undefeated record in his young career. Saturday’s TDN will feature a trio of US-bred runners entered for the Saturday program at Nakayama, where the talented Mozu Superflare (Speightstown) will take her chances against the boys in the G3 Ocean S. (1200mT).

ESCALADE FUJI (c, 3, Noble Mission {GB}–Seal of Approval, by Vindication) was his sire’s most expensive first-crop foal after hammering for $210K at Keeneland November in 2016 before fetching $200K as a KEESEP yearling, joint-second priciest of 48 sold in 2017. A half-brother to SP Paid Admission (Candy Ride {Arg}), his dam is kin to MGSW & GISP turfer Gulch Approval (Gulch), MGSW Rusty Slipper (Lemon Drop Kid), SW & MGSP Approval Rating (Lemon Drop Kid), MGSP Highest Class (Mineshaft) and Moyne Abbey (Charismatic), dam of GISW and young sire Wicked Strong (Hard Spun). 6th-HSN, ¥13,720,000 ($124k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
AVANCE (c, 3, Uncle Mo–Above Heaven, by Mr. Greeley) looks to make it two wins from as many starts, having graduated by two solid lengths over this distance at Kyoto Jan. 19 (see below, gate 9). Racing as a homebred for Dr. Masatake Iida, the bay is out of an unraced daughter of GISW Lady Joanne (Orientate), the 2007 GI Alabama S. winner who was purchased by Iida for $1.6 million in foal to Tiznow at Fasig-Tipton November in 2009. Lady Joanne’s younger half-brother is Classic winner and Darby Dan stallion Shackleford (Forestry), while she is also a half-sister to treble GSW Baghdaria (Royal Academy), MGSW Afleeting Lady (Afleet Alex) and SW & MGSP Stephanoatsee (A.P. Indy). B-Dr Masatake Iida (KY)

SHIVAJI (c, 4, First Samurai–Indian Bay, by Indian Charlie) has amassed a strong record of 3-3-2 from his eight career appearances, including a victory over this course and distance last April (video, gate 11). The $90K KEESEP yearling turned $540K OBS April juvenile purchase is a maternal grandson of GSW Buy the Barrel (E Dubai), dam of European MGSP Mise en Rose (War Front). B-Hinkle Farms (KY)
