Notable US-Bred/Sired Runners in Japan: Mar. 2, 2019 (Part 2)

We looked at a trio of US-bred runners entered for Saturday at Hanshin in Friday’s TDN and today we turn our attention to Nakayama Racecourse, where a pair of horses should start favored in their raced and a third that was foaled in Japan, but conceived in the States:

5th-NKY, ¥11,400,000 ($102k), Newcomers, 3yo, 1800m
SCHLUSSEL (JPN) (c, 3, Quality Road–Sweet Red Cat, by Bluegrass Cat) looks to become the third winner in Japan from as many runners for his very successful young sire. The February foal is the first from his Grade III-placed dam, who was purchased for $90K with the colt in utero at Keeneland November in 2015. The bay’s second dam produced GSW Soul City Slew (Slew City Slew) and he is bred on the same cross over Storm Cat-line mares responsible for this sire’s GISW Hootenanny and other GSWs Blofeld, Great Stuff and Princess La Quinta. 7th-NKY, ¥13,720,000 ($123k), Allowance, 3yo, 1600mT
FOSSAMAGNA (c, 3, War Front–River Belle {GB}, by Lahib) was extremely impressive in breaking his maiden over 1400m at first asking in December (see below, gate 15) and was not disgraced when fourth in the G3 Kyodo News Hai (1800m) Feb. 10. A $275K KEESEP buyback and $725K OBS April breezer, the half-brother to GSW & GISP Strathnaver (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and SW Siyaadah (GB) (Shamardal) gets Christophe Lemaire for the drop back in trip to a mile and should take all the beating. 11th-NKY, Ocean S.-G3, ¥78,110,000 ($698k), 4yo/up, 1200mT
MOZU SUPERFLARE (f, 4, Speightstown–Christies Treasure, by Belong to Me) is perfect in two tries over this course and distance, including a latest success Jan. 5 in which she stopped the clock in a slick 1:07 flat (see below, gate 12). The $125K KEESEP purchase, in search of a first black-type success, is kin to GSW Sacristy (Pulpit) and to Zighy Bay (Tapit), dam of recent Australian Group 2 winner Qafila (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}). Lemaire sees fit to take the call aboard the 17-10 ante-post favorite. B-Alpha Delta Stables LLC (KY)
