Regally bred TACITUS (c, 3, Tapit–Close Hatches, by First Defence) snuck up the inside late to pull off an 8-1 upset in Saturday’s GII Tampa Bay Derby. Outshine (Malibu Moon) was second, while favored Win Win Win (Hat Trick {Jpn}) settled for third in his first two-turn attempt. The winner, who is the first foal out of 2014 champion older mare Close Hatches, was fourth on debut going 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Oct. 4. He graduated by a neck at second asking at Aqueduct Nov. 10. The victory comes a week after these connections’ highly regarded Hidden Scroll (Hard Spun) was a much-talked-about fourth in the GII Fountain of Youth S. Lifetime Record: 3-2-0-0.
