Prominent owner/breeder Edward A. Cox, Jr. died Friday in Illinois, Blood-Horse has reported. A trader on the Chicago mercantile exchange, Cox was a co-owner with Claiborne Farm of 1984 champion 3-year-old colt Swale (Seattle Slew) and co-bred eventual Irish champion and successful sire Woodman (Mr. Prospector) with the late Warner L. Jones, Jr. of Hermitage Farm. The latter was a $3-million Keeneland July yearling of 1984. Cox bred MGISW and near $3-million earner Marquetry (Conquistador Cielo); as well as 1989 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Shaadi (Danzig), who was a $900,000 Keeneland July yearling himself. He also campaigned Classy Cathy (Private Account), a three-time Grade I winner of 1986 as a sophomore filly. More recently, Cox bred 2013 GII Davona Dale S. winner Live Lively (Medaglia d’Oro); 2016 GI Secretariat S. winner and Irish Group 3 winner Long Island Sound (War Front)–an $800,000 KEENOV weanling; and raced MGSW Naples Bay (Giant’s Causeway), a MGSW half to Medaglia d’Oro who he bought for $350,000 as a Keeneland November weanling and later sold for $3.6 million to Coolmore’s M. V. Magnier in foal to War Front at that same auction in 2014. Cox’s final starter as an owner was homebred Naples Princess (Distorted Humor), who annexed an Aqueduct allowance Dec. 28. The majority of his Thoroughbred holdings were dispersed through the Claiborne consignment at last year’s Keeneland November sale. A total of 20 horses brought $3,669,000, topped by $725,000 Treasure Trail (Pulpit), a half to Hall of Famer Zenyatta and the dam of the aforementioned Long Island Sound who was offered in foal to Uncle Mo.
