Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted March 27, 2019 Journalists Share Posted March 27, 2019 A filly by Kingman (GB) (lot 6), who is a half to Irish champion juvenile filly and MG1SW Rizeena (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) from Willie Brown’s Mocklershill consignment, is likely one of the stars amongst the 160 lots catalogued to the May 11 Arqana Breeze-Up Sale in Deauville. The sale has been on the up in recent years, and 2017 graduate Teppal (Fr) (Camacho {GB}) saluted in the 2018 G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, with further Classic glory going to fellow alumni Homerique (Exchange Rate), who was third in the G1 Prix de Diane later that year. Another Group 1 winner to have been purchased at this sale is G1 Preis Von Europa victor Khan (Ger) (Santiago {Ger}), who changed hands here in 2016, with GI First Lady S. third Indian Blessing (GB) (Sepoy {Aus}) another graduate of note. Current GI Kentucky Derby contender War of Will (War Front) has already struck twice at the graded level this spring. A full quarter century of 2018 Arqana Breeze-Up Sale graduates are pointing to this year’s Classics. Of the 160 2-year-olds set to go under the hammer, 20%, or 31 juveniles are siblings to black-type performers. Of those 31, 19 are half- or full-siblings to group winners, with seven siblings to Group 1 winners. Twenty-two lots are out of black-type mares, with seven group winners sprinkled among them. In addition to the Kingman half-sister to Rizeena-one of four by the Juddmonte sire at Deauville–a son of first-season sire Palace Malice (lot 74) is also a half-sibling to a champion, in this case MGISW and Eclipse Award champion Monomoy Girl (Tapizar), who won the 2018 GI Kentucky Oaks and the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff on dirt. Mocklershill will also offer the bay. 2015 US Triple Crown winner and freshman sire American Pharoah has a pair of colts catalogued, with Grove Stud’s lot 21, a colt out of Tare Green (Giant’s Causeway), hailing from the family of MGISW and Group 1 sire Leroidesanimaux (Brz) (Candy Stripes) sure to attract interest, as is lot 155, a son of Rehear (Coronado’s quest) from Powerstown Stud. The latter is a half-brother to GI Spinaway S. victress Mani Bhavan (Storm Boot), as well as GSW Hear the Ghost (Ghostzapper) and SW & GISP Closing Bell (Tapit). Of the five lots by Muhaarar (GB), lot 17, a daughter of Sun Bittern (Seeking the Gold) is well related, as she is a half-sister to G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest hero Signs of Blessing (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). The Grove Stud-consigned bay is also from the extended family of G1 Prix Saint-Alary victress Nadia (GB) (Nashwan). The Shadwell stallion also has a half-sister to G1 Prix de l’Abbaye victress Wizz Kid (Ire) (Whipper) entered as lot 119 from Gaybrook Lodge Stud. There are also a bevy of other first-season sires represented, among them Gleneagles (Ire) (2), Karakontie (Jpn) (2), Night of Thunder (Ire) (2), Sidestep (Aus)–responsible for Saturday’s G1 Golden Slipper heroine Kiamichi (Aus) (3)–and Summer Front (1). Noted speed sire Dark Angel (Ire) has two entered, a colt (lot 94) out of a half-sister to GSW & G1SP Showcasing (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and SW & GSP Camacho (GB) (Danehill)–both successful sires-from Powerstown Stud, and a Mocklershill-consigned daughter (lot 126) of Manaaber (Mediciean {GB}) from the family of high-class Japanese speedball and G1SW Fine Needle (Jpn) (Admire Moon {Jpn}). 2018 Champion first-season sire No Nay Never has nine juveniles entered, the same as France’s stallion star Siyouni (Fr), with the latter’s lot 65, a half-brother to GSW & G1SP Ocovango (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) slated to be offered by Haras du Saubouas. A trio of juveniles by Sea The Stars (Ire) will also take part, with Mocklershill’s granddaughter of champion Sayyedati (GB) (Shadeed) (lot 3) a notable entry. Lot 79 is the single juvenile by Zoffany (Ire) catalogued, but the colt is out of a half-sister to champion Najah (Ire) (Nashwan) and a grandson of another in the form of G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Mehthaaf (Nureyev) from Church Farm & Horse Park Stud. Young sire Charm Spirit (Ire) is represented by three at Deauville, with Longways Stables’ lot 43 a lot of interest. The colt is a son of French Group 1 winner Alpine Rose (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), herself a full-sister to Group 1 winner Fragrant Mix (Ire) and GSW Fracassant (Ire). Tally-Ho Stud fields a son of Dream the Blues (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) as lot 73. By Declaration of War, the bay is a half-brother to G1 Phoenix S. victor and new Coolmore stallion Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy). Near the end of the catalogue is lot 151, Grove Stud’s half-brother to G1 Sussex S. scorer Here Comes When (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), one of five for the Ballylinch Stud resident. Many prominent American stallions feature at Arqana, including Into Mischief (1), Kitten’s Joy (4), Medaglia d’Oro (2), More Than Ready (1), Pioneerof the Nile (1), Speightstown (1), Stormy Atlantic (1) and The Factor (1). Lot 107, a son of Kitten’s Joy who was responsible for last year’s Horse of the Year Roaring Lion, is consigned by Friars Lough Stables. The February foal is out of a half-sister to MG1SW Flemensfirth (Alleged). Last year’s sale saw 150 lots offered with 113 sold (75.3%) and grossing €14,766,000, the highest gross ever for the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale. The average of €130,673 was just under 2017’s €137,745 and the median was a similar case at €80,000 compared to €82,500 in 2017. Top honours went to a colt by the late Scat Daddy who brought €825,000 from Jamie McCalmont on behalf of MV Magnier from the Mocklershill consignment. Named Western Frontier, he is already a winner from three starts at Navan. The breeze-up portion will take place at Deauville Racecourse from noon local time on May 10, with the juveniles breezing left handed down the backstretch. The sale itself will start at 1:00 p.m. the date after. View the full article
