Hammered down to 1-5 in a field scratched down to just four runners, Bellafina showed good early initiative before settling in a close-up fourth through a first quarter in :24.10. Sitting just off the flank of new leader Chasing Yesterday (Tapit) through a half in :47.88, the bay maintained her position as Flor de La Mar (Tiznow) snuck up the fence to snatch control from her stablemate. Bellafina launched an attack on the outside to take control entering the far turn and cruised clear in the stretch for a decisive victory in 1:45.47. Flor de La Mar held second over Chasing Yesterday. A two-time Grade I winner last term, Bellafina checked in fourth to champion Jaywalk (Cross Traffic) as the favorite in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 2 at Churchill Downs, but returned to winning ways in her seasonal bow with an 8 1/2-length romp in the GII Santa Ynez S. here Jan. 6.
