Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted April 27, 2019 Journalists Share Posted April 27, 2019 KINGLY (c, 3, Tapit–Justwhistledixie, by Dixie Union), a full-brother to MGSW Mohaymen and half to GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hero New Year’s Day (Street Cry {Ire}), took charge at the top of the lane and held on late to capture the California Derby on Saturday’s closing day card at Golden Gate. A first-out winner Dec. 1 at Del Mar, the bay was runner-up in a sloppy Santa Anita optional claimer Jan. 31 was finished a distant second in the El Camino Real Derby here Feb. 16. Off as the 8-5 favorite in this spot, he broke inwardly at the start but soon recovered to sit well off runaway leader Erlich (Curlin) in second through splits of :23.40 and :46.82. That one threw in the towel at the quarter pole, and Kingly inherited to the lead. Clear at the eighth pole, he felt the challenge of wide-running Visitant (Ghostzapper) late, but dug in to stave that one off by a half-length in 1:42.73. Lifetime Record: 4-2-2-0, $123,200.
