Le Havre’s Roman Candle Wins the Greffulhe

Already boasting a record tally of a dozen winners of Saint-Cloud’s G2 Prix Greffulhe before Wednesday’s renewal, Andre Fabre was not stopping as he supplied a 13th via Godolphin’s Roman Candle (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}). Having been third behind Shaman (Ire) (Shamardal) in the nine-furlong G3 Prix la Force at ParisLongchamp Apr. 7, the 11-5 second favourite was pushed up by Mickael Barzalona to shadow the leader Pappalino (Fr) (Makfi {GB}) soon after the start. With the Wertheimers’ 6-5 market leader Starmaniac (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) failing to pick them up in the straight, it was left to the royal blue runner to edge ahead a furlong out and prevail by a neck, with Starmaniac a disappointing three lengths away in third.
