Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted May 28, 2019 Journalists Share Posted May 28, 2019 East Coast based Vino Rosso (Curlin-Mythical Bride, by Street cry {Ire}) capitalized on a trans-continental trek, besting favored Gift Box (Twirling Candy) in Monday’s GI Gold Cup at Santa Anita. Sent off at 4-1, last year’s GII Wood Memorial victor settled just behind pacesetter Blitzkrieg (War Front), who carved out initial fractions of :22.97 and :46.37. Approaching the quarter pole, the leader began his retreat while Gift Box moved to the fore, but Vino Rosso was in close pursuit. In the stretch, Vino Rosso carried the most momentum, passing Gift Box and remaining 3/4 of a length clear at the wire. Gift Box held for second, while closer Lone Sailor (Majestic Warrior) rounded out the trifecta. Final time for the 10-furlong test was 2:03.00. In his two prior starts this term, Vino Rosso won the Stymie S. Mar. 9 before finishing fourth in the GI Carter at Aqueduct Apr. 6. Lifetime Record:12-5-0-2, 1,253,125.
