Klassique Dominates The Pinnacle

With the rain proving unrelenting at an already wet Haydock, Yvonne Jacques’s Klassique (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) made light of conditions to readily account for the Irish mare True Self (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}) in Saturday’s G3 Pinnacle S. Runner-up to the subsequent G3 Bronte Cup second Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) in the Listed Daisy Warwick S. over this 12-furlong trip at Goodwood last time on May 4, the daughter of Chachamaidee (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) travelled easily in behind the leading pair early. Let loose with two furlongs to race, the 7-2 second favourite soon had the measure of the 8-11 market-leader True Self and drew away to score by three lengths.

William Haggas’s wife and assistant Maureen said, “They had the best of the ground, because they are on a fresh track and there was only a four-runner race before it, but she seemed to handle the ground. She is better with a bit of cut, but it’s rather exceptional today and is getting worse. They’ve had three days of rain–it’s bottomless. She was a tiny yearling and they were brave to buy her. She had a year out at two and when she came to us at three she was unrecognisable and has changed again this year–she’s holding her condition better. There are a few races for her–there’s the race at Doncaster [the Sept. 12 G2 Park Hill S.] and you could go back up in trip with her, but she’s won a group race and will be a lovely mare.”

Pedigree Notes
The lightly-campaigned Klassique, who was also runner-up in the 14-furlong G3 Prix Belle de Nuit at Saint-Cloud on her first attempt at black-type in October, is the first winner in this sphere for the classy dam who captured the G2 Lennox S., G3 Oak Tree S. and G3 Chartwell S. before being awarded the 2012 G1 Matron S. Her full-sister J Wonder was also successful on more than one occasion in pattern races, taking the G3 Fred Darling S. and the Oak Tree in keeping with family tradition. The second dam Canterbury Lace (Danehill) also produced the G3 Premier Cup winner Chief Whip from a mating with Footstepsinthesand’s sire Giant’s Causeway, while her Hawk Wing daughter Miss Kittyhawk (Ire) threw the Listed Ascendant S. winner and G1 Racing Post Trophy third Celestial Path (Ire) to a mating with Footstepsinthesand.

The third dam is the G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Legend Maker (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), responsible for the G1 1000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters (Kingmambo) and Canterbury Lace’s G3 Gallinule S.-winning full-brother Alexander of Hales who was runner-up in the G1 Irish Derby. This is the family of the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio heroine High Hawk (Ire) (Shirley Heights {GB}), the dam of the top-class runner and sire In the Wings (GB) (Sadler’s Wells). Chachamaidee also has an as-yet unraced 3-year-old filly by Dubawi (Ire) named Narak (GB), a yearling colt by the same sire and a 2019 filly by Sea the Stars (Ire).
