Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted June 8, 2019 Journalists Share Posted June 8, 2019 Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Frank Barroby was honored Saturday in the Woodbine winner’s circle as the recipient of the 2019 Avelino Gomez Memorial Award. The award is presented annually on Woodbine Oaks day to a Canadian-born or Canadian-raised horseman who has significantly contributed to horse racing. Additionally, it can also go to a rider who has been based in Canada for more than five years. Patricia Gomez, wife of the late namesake for the award, was on hand to make the presentation to Barroby. Avelino Gomez passed away due to complications from an accident sustained in the 1980 Canadian Oaks. Barroby, a Saskatchewan native, won several riding titles in Canada before earning Hall of Fame status for his success as a trainer. He had competed against Gomez during his riding days. “I love the guy and what an athlete he was,” said Barroby. “He was probably one of the best athletes I’ve ever seen put a leg over a horse. You could watch him and you could just see the horse extend when he’d put him in a drive.” The post Barroby Given Avelino Gomez Award appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
