Coming of age when winning the May 31 G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum’s Defoe (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) followed up from the Czech raider Nagano Gold (GB) (Sixties Icon {GB}) in Saturday’s G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot. Held up in the last trio early by Andrea Atzeni, the 11-4 favourite delivered the same acceleration he had last time to hit the front 1 1/2 furlongs out and hold the race’s surprise package by a half length.
