Strong Start to Derby Sale

The two-day Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale got off to a flying start on Wednesday when a French-bred son of Al Namix (Fr) held sway when selling for €190,000. The 3-year-old gelding, offered by Sluggara Farm as lot 73 was knocked down to Kevin and Anna Ross on behalf of owner Chris Jones. “He is a gorgeous individual, we had to push the boat out a bit, but he is our pick of the sale,” said Ross. “I have not had much to do with progeny by Al Namix before but he obviously gets class horses. The first runner out of the mare is useful which gives a lot of confidence too. He will go to Chris’s farm to be broken in and pre-trained, I don’t know what the plan will be then,” Ross added. Thirteen six figure lots throughout the day contributed to an aggregate of €9,003,000, an average of €52,343 and a median of €45,000. A healthy 82% clearance rate was achieved when 172 of the 209 offered changed hands. Mags O’Toole was responsible for buying the second highest price horse when giving €180,000 for lot 57. The son of Milan (GB) was offered by Roxborough Stud, while British based bloodstock agent Aiden Murphy combined with his trainer son Oliver to acquire lots 91 and 146 for €170,000 and €165,000 respectively. The action continues at Tattersalls Ireland from 10.30a.m. on Thursday.
