MARAUD (c, 3, Blame–Unbridled Empire, by Empire Maker) rallied from off a contested pace to capture his second graded stakes win in the GII American Turf S. at Churchill. Third in both the GIII Pilgrim S. and Pulpit S. as a juvenile, the $375,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic buy took a Gulfstream optional claimer Jan. 13 and repeated there in the GIII Palm Beach S. Mar. 3. Finishing fifth last out in the GIII Transylvania S. Apr. 6 at Keeneland, the bay drifted up to 42-5 in this boggy-turf test and traveled in eighth as a trio of leaders sparred through splits of :23.79 and :48.39. Revving up on the latter half of the far turn, he swept to the lead a sixteenth from home and held sway from Untamed Domain (Animal Kingdom) to score by 1 1/4 lengths. The final time was 1:47.52 over the rain-softened course, almost six full seconds slower than Toinette (Scat Daddy) ran in winning the sophomore filly counterpart GIII Edgewood S. Friday on firm ground. The winner has a juvenile half-sister by Flatter who sold for $200,000 at KEESEP and a yearling Will Take Charge half-brother. His dam was bred to Runhappy last term. Sales History: $100,000 Ylg ’16 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 7-4-0-2, $348,510. O-Treadway Racing Stable; B-John R. & Frank Penn (KY); T-Todd A. Pletcher.
