Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted July 21, 2019 Journalists Share Posted July 21, 2019 MAXIMUM SECURITY (c, 3, New Year’s Day–Lil Indy, by Anasheed) stalked the pace, took over at the top of the lane and kept finding late to turn back Mucho Gusto (Mucho Macho Man), capturing the GI TVG.com Haskell Invitational and moving right back into the upper echelon in the battle for champion 3-year-old. Infamously disqualified to 17th in the GI Kentucky Derby, the homebred was bested at 1-20 in the Pegasus S. here June 16, but that didn’t deter the public, who made Maximum Security a 4-5 chalk in this Monmouth meet centerpiece. Away well from his outside draw, the bay pressed the pace as the top five horses bunched up through quick fractions of :22.92 and :46.71. Going on with it while making things tight on retreating King for a Day (Uncle Mo) approaching the stretch, he hooked up with Mucho Gusto soon after straightening and those two had it to themselves the rest of the way, with Maximum Security finding just a bit more late to repel his challenger by a length in 1:47.56. It was a chasm back to longshot Spun to Run (Hard Spun) in third. It briefly appeared as though there would be a reprise of the Derby controversy, as an inquiry was taken into King for a Day’s steady, but it was quickly announced that there would be no change.
