Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 31, 2019 Journalists Share Posted August 31, 2019 It was a lot closer than supporters of Positive (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) would have liked, but Alan Spence’s bay managed to leave Sandown on Saturday with the G3 Solario S. in the locker. Understandably the 4-5 favourite having finished second to Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) in the G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood last time July 30, he sat fourth early way off the strong early tempo. Driven to gain the advantage approaching the furlong pole, he was either tiring or idling on the uphill climb as he let Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) back in but gave that little extra to prevail by a nose, with Al Suhail (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) a length back in third. “You can’t take anything away from him, he has progressed with every start and has a good mind,” jockey Adam Kirby said. “He’s still a baby, so you can’t ask for any more.” Positive, who won on debut by five lengths over this trip at Salisbury June 26 before finishing that margin back from Pinatubo in the Vintage but the same distance in front of the subsequent G3 Round Tower S. winner Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), is likely to stay at least a mile on pedigree. His dam Osipova (GB) (Makfi {GB}), who won twice over 12 furlongs for Cheveley Park Stud, is a half-sister to one of Dutch Art’s better performers in this stable’s miler Zonderland (GB). Successful in the G3 Sovereign S., he was runner-up in two renewals of the G2 Celebration Mile and in the G2 Challenge S. Trainer Clive Cox believes there is a lot to come. “I still think he is a work in progress, he’s not the finished article so we’ll do what’s right for him. He’ll be a far better horse next year and what he’s done so far is amazing. He is still quite raw and is progressing and doing everything right. He is well-entered, but first and foremost we’ll see how he comes back from here. All options are open over seven furlongs and a mile and we’ll keep it that way. We’re aware we’ve got a five-length gap to close on Pinatubo, who is impeccable.” Pedigree Notes Osipova, who also has a yearling full-sister to Positive and a filly foal by Ulysses (Ire), is a granddaughter of Russian Rhythm who excelled for Cheveley Park when winning the G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Coronation S. and G1 Nassau S. as a 3-year-old before adding the G1 Lockinge S. to her tally the following season. She later produced the Listed Sandringham H. third Safina (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who is in turn the dam of the G3 Fred Darling S. scorer Marenko (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and the promising debut 2-year-old debut winner Melnikova (GB) (Frankel {GB}). This is also the family of the G3 Sceptre S. winner Spangled (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Alydaress (Alydar) and the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and G1 Cheveley Park S. winner Park Appeal (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}). She was responsible for the leading sire Cape Cross (Ire) (Green Desert) and the G1 Cheveley Park S. winner Desirable (Ire) (Lord Gayle), in turn the dam of the G1 1000 Guineas heroine Shadayid (Shadeed).
