TORTUGA (f, 2, Bodemeister–Hot Water, by Medaglia d’Oro) was backed as the 2-1 second choice in this debut run. She settled nicely toward the rear in the early going, hit the gas with a good-looking move on the far turn and gamely split horses in deep stretch to graduate by a neck. Favored stablemate Empire Angel (Empire Maker), a $450,000 OBSAPR graduate, was second. The winner is a half-sister to Tracksmith (Street Sense), SW, $219,033. Hot Water is also represented by a Nyquist colt of 2018 ($400,000 yearling purchase by Solis/Litt at FTSAUG) and a Speightster filly of this year. She was bred back to Runhappy. Tortuga’s third dam is champion Xtra Heat (Dixieland Heat). The victory was especially sweet for owners Mike and Meg Levy, as Tortuga represents the first winner for the couple in the colors of Robert Levy, the father of Mike Levy who raced the likes of Housebuster and Bet Twice. Bob Levy passed away in November 2018 at the age of 87. “We usually sell everything, but I said, ‘Fine, we’ll race her,’ said Mike Levy. “A couple of months ago, I switched over my father’s silks to us and the trainer called Tuesday and said that he was going to enter her for Friday. So we did a rush job on the silks and she managed to win. First time in my dad’s silks, so it’s pretty special. It’s pretty fabulous that Bob Levy’s silks live on. The Jockey Club could not have been easier to work with.” The Levys had Tortuga entered for this year’s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale, but elected to scratch her. “She was training great, but she got a little ouchy and Meg said, ‘We’re not going to hurt her, let’s just race her’ and that’s the story,” Mike Levy explained. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $32,107. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
