Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 8, 2019 Journalists Share Posted October 8, 2019 Retired trainer Vinnie Blengs passed away Oct. 5 in South Florida at the age of 90. Known as the ‘King of Suffolk Downs during his heyday, he won 1,981 races and more than $24 million in purses. He saddled his last horse at Calder in May of 2010. The Massachusetts native had a lot of success racing in Maryland as well, winning graded events like the Selima and Federico Tesio. Blengs also won a pair of Grade Is in New York, taking the 1984 Peter Pan S. and 1991 Sword Dancer S. at Belmont. In addition, he was instrumental in launching the career of Hall of Fame rider Edgar Prado when he came to New England. A celebration of Blengs’ life will be held in December at Gulfstream, where a race will be named in his honor.
