Sweet Melania (f, 2, American Pharoah–Sweet N Discreet, by Discreet Cat), a narrow runner-up in the P.G. Johnson S. at Saratoga Aug. 29, turned in an eye-catching performance in Wednesday’s GII JPMorgan Chase Jessamine S. at Keeneland, a ‘Win and You’re In’ for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

The 3-1 shot forced the issue from second through an opening quarter in :23.29, began to edge clear on the run down the backstretch and ran away and hid from them in the stretch to score by 5 1/4 lengths. Witez (More Than Ready) was second; Ask Bailey (Run Away and Hide) was third.

The final time for 1 1/16 miles over the “good” going was 1:43.13.

Sweet Melania is the fourth black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Pioneerof the Nile).

Sales history: $600,000 yrl ’18 KEESEP.

Lifetime Record: 5-2-1-2.
