Morticia Goes Out a Millionaire

Morticia (Twirling Candy), who eclipsed $1 million in career earnings with her runner-up effort to Oleksandra (Aus) (Animal Kingdom) in Friday’s GIII Buffalo Trace Franklin County S. at Keeneland, has been retired from racing, according to trainer Rusty Arnold, who bred the bay in partnership with longtime client G. Watts Humphrey Jr.

“I’m pretty sure that’s it. There’s not much left for her to do and I think now she will go to the farm where she grew up,” Arnold said. “We’ve got our two horses [Totally Boss {Street Boss} and Leinster {Majestic Warrior}) for the [GI] Breeders’ Cup [Turf Sprint] and there are six or seven other good ones, so it will be up to one of those two to carry the banner for us.”

A stakes winner at three, four and five, the consistent Morticia made the 2017 Franklin County the first graded victory of her career and added the Penn Ladies’ Dash for her lone black-type success of 2018. She was also third in defense of her Franklin County title. In eight trips to the post this term, Morticia compiled a record of 3-3-1, with scores in Keeneland’s Giant’s Causeway S. during the spring meeting and a handy tally in the GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies’ Sprint Sept. 7 ahead of Friday’s effort.

“I know how lucky I am,” said Arnold. “I have a one-broodmare band [the Mr. Greeley mare Halloween Party] and I have a millionaire out of her.”
