In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for Sunday at Kyoto and for Monday’s typhoon-postponed program at Tokyo:

Sunday, October 20, 2019
4th-KYO, ¥13,400,000 ($123k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400mT
STREPTOCARPUS (f, 2, War Front–Together {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), a $600K Keeneland September purchase, is the latest to make the races from her dam, Ballydoyle’s 2011 GI QE II Challenge Cup winner who was also multiple Group 1-placed in England and Ireland, where she was the champion 3-year-old of her generation. A half-sister to MGSP Earring (Dansili {GB}) and a full to SP Battle of Jericho, the April foal is out of a half-sister to G1SW Jan Vermeer (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and is bred on the same cross responsible for G1SWs Roly Poly and U S Navy Flag. B-Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt (KY)

JIGEN (c, 2, Into Mischief–Under Wraps, by Dixie Union) was a $90K KEESEP acquisition and blossomed into a $340K OBS March juvenile after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat earlier this year. The bay is out of a winning full-sister to GISW Overanalyze and a half to GISW Meadow Breeze (Meadowlake), dam of GISP Royal Copy (Bodemeister). B-Diamond A Racing Corp (KY)

Monday, October 21, 2019
5th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($123k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400mT
DETROIT TESORO (f, 2, Speightstown–Bella Traviata, by Indian Charlie) was the very first horse through the ring at this year’s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale, selling to Kenji Ryotokuji for $375K after working in :10 flat. Speightstown has accounted for 24 Japanese winners from 27 starters and is set to be represented by the locally based GSW & G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen runner-up Matera Sky in the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Ryotokuji campaigns Speightstown’s MSW (dirt) and G1SP (turf) 5-year-old mare Rieno Tesoro. Detroit Tesoro was a $190K FTSAUG RNA and a $127K buyback at FTKOCT last fall. B-Blackstone Farm LLC (PA)
