Ascot’s G2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup threw up an epic, with Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) denying Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) his second renewal in a pulsating finale. Sent to the front approaching two out by Donnacha O’Brien, the 7-2 second favourite was headed by Bjorn Nielsen’s 8-13 favourite a furlong later but stayed in the fight and regained the advantage in the final yards to prevail in a photo. “He got an unbelievable ride and is a brave horse,” Aidan O’Brien commented. “We were coming to the Gold Cup with him, but he got an injury and it set him back for the whole season and he barely got back to run at The Curragh [when second in the Sept. 15 G1 St Leger].”

KEW GARDENS (IRE), c, 4, Galileo (Ire)–Chelsea Rose (Ire), by Desert King (Ire).
O-Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier & Michael Tabor; B-Barronstown Stud (IRE); T-Aidan O’Brien; J-Donnacha O’Brien. £255,195. Lifetime Record: 17-6-5-2, £1,399,666.
