Popular globetrotter and 2016 G1 Irish St. Leger hero Wicklow Brave (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}-Moraine {GB}, by Rainbow Quest), who excelled under both codes for Wicklow Bloodstock and trainer Willie Mullins, fell at the final fence of the G1 Grand National Hurdle S. at Far Hills, New Jersey and was later euthanised, the course reported Saturday on Twitter. The 10-year-old gelding sustained a fractured right shoulder and was transported back to the stable area where he was put down, reported the New Jersey State Veterinarian Dr. Stacey Romano.

Gelded before ever facing the starter, the bay began his career in National Hunt Flat races as a 4-year-old and made his way up the ranks, ultimately winning the G1 Punchestown Champion Hurdle in 2017, as he was switched back and forth from jumps to the flat and handled every challenge with aplomb. An €11,000 Tattersalls Ireland September yearling turned €43,000 Tattersalls Ireland Derby National Hunt 3-year-old, he made 23 starts on the Flat, and participated in both the 2016 G1 Melbourne Cup and 2017 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, although unplaced each occasion. As recently as Aug. 1, he took the G3 Novice Chase at Galway sandwiched between two more chasing wins, his final start before his Far Hills appearance being a win at Listowel on Sept. 8. The Millsec Limited-bred’s record stands at 59-17-8-7 and $1,323,663 in earnings.
