Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 25, 2019 Journalists Share Posted October 25, 2019 Saturday’s cards at Doncaster and Newbury could be abandoned due to the heavy swathe of rain crossing Britain, with morning inspections planned at both venues. If racing goes ahead, TDN Rising Stars Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Kinross (GB) (Kingsman {GB}) will have to deal with extremely testing conditions as they tackle the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy and G3 Cancom S., or Horris Hill as it is better known. Mogul, who comes into Doncaster’s juvenile feature on the back of a win in Leopardstown’s G2 Champions Juvenile S. Sept. 14, is one of five from Ballydoyle taking on one outside rival in Kameko (Kitten’s Joy). Aidan O’Brien requires one more win in the race to equal the record of 10 set by the late Sir Henry Cecil and Qatar Racing’s Aug. 31 G3 Solario S. and Sept. 28 G2 Royal Lodge S. runner-up is the only obstacle in his way. The Ballydoyle handler, whose second string appears to be the Sept. 29 G2 Beresford S. winner Innisfree (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), said, “Innisfree travels well. We always thought he was a Classic horse and he’s been working nice since the Beresford. We thought this would be the logical race for him. Mogul has been progressing with every run–they are both smart colts. They are still on the upgrade and when they are doing that you don’t know who is going to progress the most.” Andrew Balding said of Kameko, “Obviously the ground is very much a concern, they are going to get an awful lot of rain. Having said that, there are suggestions in his pedigree that he could handle it. I’m very happy with him and we’re looking forward to the challenge.” Kinross enters Newbury’s Horris Hill off a stunning eight-length debut success over this seven-furlong trip at Newmarket Oct. 5 and trainer Ralph Beckett said, “We’re very happy with him and he worked well earlier in the week. You never expect them to win like that, but we’ve been pleased with him since.” Godolphin are represented by the May 30 Yarmouth novice winner Boccaccio (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and he is another unexposed type, but trainer Charlie Appleby admits to being in the dark about conditions. “Boccaccio had an extended break over the summer but his preparation for this race has gone well,” he said. “There is a question mark over how he will cope with soft ground, but we feel that he is ready to step up to this company. This is a bit of a fact-finding mission but we are hopeful that he can mix it at this level, with a view to potentially looking at some of the Classic trials in the spring.” Roger Teal has a rare Classic hopeful in Kenzai Warrior (Karakontie {Jpn}), who beat Ralph Beckett’s subsequent G3 Zetland S. scorer Max Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) on his sole outing at Salisbury Sept. 5. “We were always planning one more run as he’d been pleasing us at home, so it will do him good getting more experience,” he explained. “We’re chucking him in at the deep end, but he’d have had to carry a penalty in a novice and you never know what you are taking on. Ralph’s horse has franked the form of the Salisbury race, winning the Zetland. We think we’ve got an aeroplane, but this time Ralph might be taking us on with a Red Arrow. He was very impressive at Newmarket.” “The ground could level the playing field for them all,” Teal added. “We are coming down from a mile, but in the conditions that might just help us, as stamina could come into it looking at the forecast. He’s got an action that suggests soft won’t be a problem and we’ve taken him to the Lambourn gallops when there’s been cut in the ground and he’s handled it–this might be a bit worse, though. It could be a case of who handles it the best. He’s a seriously nice horse and we like him a lot.” Also at Newbury, Aidan O’Brien puts forward ‘TDN Rising Star’ Peaceful (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})–a seven-furlong maiden winner at Thurles Oct. 10–in the Listed Radley S. for fillies over seven furlongs while at Leopardstown, the nine-furlong G3 Eyrefield S. sees him saddle a newcomer in Dawn Rising (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a full-brother to this year’s G1 Irish Derby hero Sovereign (Ire). In the 10-furlong G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, the master of Rosegreen has a trio in the Oct. 12 G3 Zetland S. fourth Mythical (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), the Oct. 14 Gowran mile maiden winner Arthur’s Kingdom (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Celtic High King (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who scored over a mile at Leopardstown on Saturday and is a son of the G1 1000 Guineas heroine Homecoming Queen (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Christophe Ferland may have the best hopes of keeping the race at home with the Wertheimers’ Oct. 10 Listed Grand Criterium de Bordeaux winner Pao Alto (Fr) (Intello {Ger}), while as in the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster Andrew Balding is taking on Ballydoyle with Via De Vega (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). He unveiled a strong finishing surge to score on debut over a mile at Sandown Sept. 18. “Obviously he is stepping up in class, but the 10-furlong trip should suit him and the testing ground should as well,” Balding said. “The horse is in really good shape, so while he’s only just won a maiden and lacks a bit of experience, hopefully he’ll run very well. Fox Tal went out to run in this last year, although he’d had another couple of runs, but this fellow is a very similar type of horse.” The post Rain Threatens Saturday Action appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
