Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 26, 2019 Journalists Share Posted October 26, 2019 Making his first appearance since winning his second Grade I of the year in the Haskell Invitational S. at Monmouth Park, Gary and Mary West’s MAXIMUM SECURITY (c, 3, New Year’s Day-Lil Indy, by Anasheed) was not given a breather for the opening 5 1/2 furlongs of Saturday’s GIII Bold Ruler H. at Belmont Park, but in the end, the colt’s class shone through as he came home a comfortable two-length winner. Nicely into stride from the pole position, he showed the way through an opening quarter-mile in :22.90, as he took some pace pressure to his outside. Still going well within himself on the turn, he responded when popped the question in upper stretch and kicked on nicely, stopping the timer in a very slick 1:20.76 for the seven furlongs on a fast main track. Winner of this year’s GI Florida Derby to run his record to a perfect four-for-four, he crossed the line first in the GI Kentucky Derby, but was famously taken down from the victory. He suffered a shock defeat in the June 16 Pegasus S., but atoned in no uncertain terms in the Haskell. He was withdrawn from possible appearances in the GI Runhappy Travers S. and in the GI Pennsylvania Derby-for which he was entered, but scratched-and ultimately time was called on possible Breeders’ Cup run. The Bold Ruler being used as a steppingstone to the GI Cigar Mile H. in early December. Lifetime Record: 8-6-1-0. O/B-Gary & Mary West (KY); T-Jason Servis.
