Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 29, 2019 Journalists Share Posted October 29, 2019 NEWMARKET, UK—From a £2,000 Ascot yearling to a 625,000gns horse in training is quite a leap but it has been the one taken by Tattersalls wild card Summer Sands (GB) (Coach House {Ire}), whose third-place finish in the G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. and listed Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy victory led to his surprise inclusion in the catalogue and top-lot status on Tuesday. His price was the third-highest ever at the Horses-in-Training Sale and it represents a significant return on investment for the Cool Silk Partnership who have owned him for only seven months since purchasing him at the Ascot Breeze-up Sale for £85,000 through agent Matt Coleman. “It’s bittersweet in a way,” said Chris Swann, the son of Cool Silk founder Peter Swann. “We think he’ll be a brilliant horse next year but we tend to buy 2-year-olds and we will be back here at the breeze-ups and also at Ascot, which has been a lucky sale for us.” Summer Sands (lot 720A) is a son of the Ishiguru mare Koharu (GB), whose dam Vellena (GB) (Lucky Story) is a half-sister to Ishiguru’s top-rated runner, the G2 Coventry S. winner Hellvelyn (GB). He will now transfer from Richard Fahey’s Yorkshire stable to Ireland, where he will be trained by Joseph O’Brien, the recipient of the top two lots from the second session of the sale, both of which were signed for by Bill Dwan. “He is a gorgeous, scopey horse and I think he has some more improvement to come next year. He’ll get to Ireland and have a break,” said Dwan. A scattering of six-figure lots throughout the day punctuated a solid middle-market session. This was underlined by a strong clearance rate, which rose again from a decent opening day to 91%, with 259 of the 28 horses offered finding a buyer. Across the board figures remained largely on par with 2018. At 18,000gns, the median was up slightly by 3%, the 31,381gns average dropped by 9%, and with an extra 21 horses sold compared to the corresponding session last year, turnover was down a little at 8,127,800gns. Rare Kingsbarns Gelding Makes A SplashIf you can’t beat them, buy them. For Joseph O’Brien and Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez, that was the decision taken when it came to the purchase of Dance Jupiter (Ire) (Kingsbarns {Ire}). The twice-raced 3-year-old (lot 515) asserted his superiority on his second racecourse appearance when beating Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}), owned by Regalado-Gonzalez and trained by O’Brien. That colt, a 230,000gns purchase by his trainer in the same ring in July, has subsequently stamped the form by going on to win a Curragh maiden by four lengths. His previous conqueror will now be joining him at O’Brien’s Carriganog Racing having been bought from John Kiely’s stable for 275,000gns. Bill Dwan did the bidding on the new owner’s behalf, seeing off underbidder Troy Steve in the process and said, “We obviously think that the form was good—let’s hope we’re right.” O’Brien may well have fond memories of Dance Jupiter’s sire as he rode Kingsbarns, who was bred by his mother Annemarie and trained by his father Aidan, to victory in the G1 Racing Post Trophy of 2012. The son of Galileo (Ire) stood for one season at Coolmore’s Castlehyde Stud but his stallion career was dogged by poor fertility and Dance Jupiter is one of just five named horses to have been bred in Europe by the stallion. Kingsbarns died last year from colic after being relocated to Drakenstein Stud in South Africa. The price brought by his son will have been more than balm for Dance Jupiter’s original pinhooker Ger Burke, who bought him for €15,500 as a yearling at Tattersalls Ireland and breezed him the following year. The decision to buy him back at £30,000 at Doncaster may have been a painful one to make at the time but the gelding has now rewarded Burke’s patience. Another Archipenko For Hong Kong The exploits of the Group 1-winning Archipenko brothers Time Warp (GB) and Glorious Forever (GB) have been sufficiently conspicuous to ensure that the remaining offspring of their late sire are firmly on the radar of potential buyers for Hong Kong, and that will indeed be the destination for his son Franklyn (Ire) (lot 834). The winner of four of his last five starts for trainer Aidan Anthony Howard and owner-breeders Peter and Elizabeth Jones, the 3-year-old was a late highlight of the day’s action around 9pm when sold for 200,000gns to George Ma of Bloosom Breeding, with Kevin Philippart, who conducted the bidding. The gelding owns an impeccable pedigree as he is inbred 3×3 to the great Miesque, who features as the grandam of Archipenko through his sire Kingmambo, while Franklyn’s dam Happy (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) is out of Miesque’s daughter Second Happiness. A family which is never far from the racing headlines, it featured prominently last year through Second Happiness’s son Study Of Man (Ire). The Deep Impact (Jpn) colt won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and, bringing this particular story full circle, he has recently been announced as the new stallion for Lanwades Stud, which was formerly the home of Archipenko and is owned by Kirsten Rausing, the breeder of Time Warp and Glorious Forever. Incinerator Hot Stuff At TattsThe stock of Juddmonte’s Oasis Dream (GB) have been in demand so far at Tattersalls this week, with three of his sons taking prominent positions on the leaderboard. One of those, Incinerator (GB) (lot 634), has now left Hugo Palmer’s stable for a trip to Saudi Arabia, where it is hoped he will be a contender for an $800,000 race on the undercard for the $20 million Saudi Cup next year on Feb. 29. Abdulaziz Al-Mousa went to 200,000gns to secure the juvenile, who has won twice this year and placed on another six occasions. He said, “There is a race over a mile for 3-year-olds and I liked this colt’s looks and his pedigree. He goes on fast ground and the all-weather so he should be okay on dirt.” Homebred by Turkish owner-breeeder Vefa Ibrahim Araci, Incinerator is the first foal for his listed-placed dam Bella Nostalgia (Ire) (Raven’s Pass) who also raced for Araci and is out of a half-sister to Falbrav (Ire). Hedger Commits To Beckhampton GraduateTotal Commitment (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) came to Newmarket from Roger Charlton’s Wiltshire base at Beckhampton and he’ll head not far from there when joining Peter Hedger’s team in Hampshire for PCF Racing. The same trainer and owner had previously bought the Juddmonte-bred Silent Echo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) from Charlton’s stable and they decided to return to the source of that success when spending 200,000gns on the 3-year-old, who had doubled his tally of wins to four since the publication of the catalogue. “I like to buy from Roger but I don’t usually go that high for a horse,” said Hedger. “He won last week at Kempton and Jason [Watson] said he feels he has at least 7lbs in hand.” He added with a grin, “I should be able to get at last one win out of him.” A 90,000gns yearling purchase from breeder Watership Down Stud, Total Commitment (lot 753) won for the first time last December and, following an eight-month absence from the track, returned in August to win three of his four starts this year. The grandson of G1 Fillies’ Mile winner Crystal Music (Nureyev) is now rated 92. A Princely SumStuart Williams has enjoyed a highly successful season and has a nice new recruit for next year in Prince Of Harts (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who was bought by one of the trainer’s principal owners, Tom Morley, for 170,000gns. Sold from Rod Millman’s stable as lot 576, the 3-year-old, bred by Harts Farm Stud, has won three times this year with his latest victory coming just over a week ago at Windsor off a mark of 83. He has now been raised in the ratings to 90. With the hope being that he could progress to running in York’s valuable Ebor H. next August, Morley said, “He is a nice horse who looks progressive. James [Millman, son of the trainer] has been going on about this horse all year so he has always shown ability at home.” Though Prince Of Harts has not yet won beyond an extended mile, there are stamina hopes within his immediate family as his dam Reaf (GB) (In The Wings {GB}) is a sister to Doncaster Cup winner Boreas (GB) and has already produced black-type earners on the Flat and over hurdles. Buenos DiasMonday at Tattersalls felt a little like Australia Day and there was more to come on Tuesday when the training team of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace invested 150,000gns in the Newsells Park Stud-bred Bartholemu Dias (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB}). Lot 525 had originally been bought as a yearling for 60,000gns by Alastair Donald on behalf of Hong Kong-based owner P K Siu and, when offered again from Charles Hills’s stable, Donald was in the fray once more on the co-trainers’ behalf, signing the docket in partnership with Blandford Bloodstock. “This is a horse I bought as a yearling so I know him well, ” he said. “His style of running should suit Australia, he is versatile over a mile and a half to two miles and he likes fast ground.” Now rated 97, the 4-year-old is a treble winner. His dam, the listed-placed Lady Francesca (GB), is a Montjeu (Ire) half-sister to the dual Group 3 winner Purr Along (GB), who is also by the former Newsells Park stallion Mount Nelson and sold for 1 millions gns at the December Sale six years ago.
