Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 29, 2019 Journalists Share Posted October 29, 2019 Sam Houston Race Track, which kicks off its 2020 season Friday, Jan. 10, will offer an increase in purses through its 39-day Thoroughbred meeting which concludes Mar. 28. The Texas track will offer overnight purses of approximately $200,000 per day including the following changes from 2019: • Maiden races – $36,000 (up from $20,000) • Claiming races – approx. 80% increase • Allowance races – $37,000 (up from $21,000) Additionally, the 2020 Thoroughbred stakes schedule will offer over $1.75 million in purses, up from $1.1 million in 2019. “To be first out of the gate to begin the process of improving racing in Texas is certainly an opportunity to which we look forward,” said Frank Hopf. “Our new purse levels and stakes program have generated interest and enthusiasm about our 2020 live racing season. These are exciting times for the Texas horse racing industry.” Stall applications for the upcoming meet are due Tuesday, Nov. 5. The Sam Houston Race Park barn area will open on Tuesday, Dec. 3 with training hours set to commence on Friday, Dec. 6.
