Mount Nelson (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}-Independence {GB}, by Selkirk), a Group 1 winner and sire, has died at Boardsmill Stud in Ireland at the age of 15, according to Racing Post. The G1 Criterium International winner had suffered from a long-term infection.

A 320,000gns yearling bred by Cliveden Stud, Mount Nelson was trained by Aidan O’Brien for the Coolmore partners and won two of three starts at two, including his Group 1 in France. Mount Nelson made just one start at three, beating one home in the G1 Champion S., but he redeemed himself at four with a victory in the G1 Coral-Eclipse and was retired after finishing third in the GI Arlington Million. Mount Nelson entered stud at Newsells Park Stud in 2009, where he stood for eight years and sired G1 British Champions Sprint S. winner Librisa Breeze (GB). His 12 group winners also include the G2 Royal Lodge S. winner Berkshire (GB), and he left two Group 1 winners in Argentina, Entropia (Arg) and Pure Nelson (Arg). He is also the broodmare sire of G1 National S. winner Quorto (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Mount Nelson began to catch the eye with early his jumps runners, which include back-to-back Cheltenham victor Penhill (GB), and he was sold to Boardsmill Stud for the 2017 season to stand as a dual-purpose sire. His first crop of Irish-conceived foals are yearlings.

Boardsmill Stud’s John Flood told Racing Post, “Mount Nelson has sadly passed away following a prolonged battle with lymphangitis. He had suffered from the condition for a past number of years but it was kept under control with great management from our team here at Boardsmill and also the team at Newsells Park Stud, where he stood previously. However, the condition worsened significantly this spring and it resulted in him missing the second half of the covering season.

“Mount Nelson showed great battling qualities through these last few months but despite the best efforts of the team at Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital and the whole team here at Boardsmill, the condition progressively worsened throughout the year and ultimately our efforts to save him were in vain.”
