Into Mischief’s Covfefe Proves Best in F/M Sprint

The rail draw proved to be a non-issue for the fleet-footed Covfefe (Into Mischief), who held off a furious late rally from fellow sophomore Bellafina (Quality Road) to take the GI Breeders’ Cup F/M Sprint S. Hammered down to 3-2 favoritism by post time, the blaze-faced bay sat in a close-up third on the rail as longshots Danuska’s My Girl (Shackleford) and Heavenhasmynikki (Majestic Warrior) battled it out through opening splits of :22.13 and :44.78. Sweeping to the lead entering the stretch, Covfefe rolled clear in the lane, but Bellafina charged after her under a head of steam and was the only one in earshot at the final sixteenth. Try as she might, however, Bellafina could not close the gap in time and Covfefe hit the line 3/4 of a length clear in a final time of 1:22.40. Dawn the Destroyer (Speightstown) rallied from last to complete the trifecta, but was well back from the top two. It was the first Breeders’ Cup victory for the Roth family’s LNJ Foxwoods and the second of the weekend for trainer Brad Cox, who saddled GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine British Idiom (Flashback) Friday.

Winning the GIII Miss Preakness S. in track record time in May, Covfefe finished third behind her elder GISW Mia Mischief (Into Mischief) in the Roxelana S. at Churchill Downs in June. Winning a gritty battle with GI Kentucky Oaks victress Serengeti Empress (Alternation) to take Saratoga’s GI Test S. Aug. 3, the $250,000 KEESEP buy followed suit with a dominant score in the Dogwood S. Sept. 21. Lifetime Record: 8-6-0-1.
