Pure Prize’s Blue Prize Upsets Midnight Bisou in the Distaff

BLUE PRIZE (ARG) (m, 6, Pure Prize–Blues for Sale {Arg}, by Not For Sale {Arg}) pulls off what is arguably one of the biggest upsets of the weekend, defeating the seemingly untouchable Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) in the GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The 8-1 shot ran in second last off the flank of Midnight Bisou as GI Kentucky Oaks victress Serengeti Empress (Alternation) clocked an opening quarter in :46.68. Making a powerful run into contention on the backstretch, the chestnut swallowed up the pacesetter in early stretch and kept on finding to hold Midnight Bisou at bay by 1 ½ lengths in 1:50.50. Midnight Bisou was buried down on the fence most of the way and by the time she got out, had plenty left to do. She rallied valiantly to be second and Serengeti Empress held on for third. Blue Prize is scheduled to sell in the upcoming Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Midnight Bisou was supposed to go to that auction as well, but it was announced Saturday morning that she would be withdrawn and remain in training for 2020.

Winner of the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. last term and fourth in the Distaff, Blue Prize was third in the GI La Troienne S. May 3 and was second to Elate (Medaglia d’Oro) in the GII Fleur de Lis H. June 15. Third to that foe in the GII Delaware H. July 13, the 6-year-old returned to winning ways in the Summer Colony S. at the Spa in August and defeated Elate in the Spinster Oct. 6.
