Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted November 14, 2019 Journalists Share Posted November 14, 2019 Memorial services for Juan Becerra, who died Monday following a training accident at Belmont Park Nov. 8, will be held Monday, Nov. 18 from 7-9 p.m. at Elmont Funeral Home located at 1529 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, N.Y. A moment of silence was observed following Thursday’s fifth race at Aqueduct Racetrack to honor the memory of Becerra, who was an exercise rider for trainer Steve Asmussen. “Our hearts and condolences go out to Juan’s family and friends. He was a greatly respected member of our team who was dedicated to his family and to the horses in our care,” said Toby Sheets, assistant trainer to Steve Asmussen. The 43-year-old lost consciousness while exercising a horse on Belmont’s training track Friday morning and fell from his mount. He was transported to Winthrop Hospital where he was placed on life support, but did not recover. Becerra is survived by his wife Karen and their three children.
