Friday’s Racing Insights: $1.3M Curlin Filly Returns at Del Mar

Shah/Magnier/Tabor/Smith’s Saralin (Curlin) looks to step forward off a runner-up finish behind Gingham (Quality Road) at Santa Anita Oct. 31. That day, the bay was asked to rate behind a gaggle of rivals early, made a nice move to take control in stretch, but got a bit leg-weary late and will certainly be better for that education in this second go. Secured for $1.3 million by agent Ben McElroy on behalf of this partnership at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale in March following an eighth-of-a-mile breeze in :10 flat, the filly is a half to GISW Salutos Amigos (Salute the Sarge) and GSW Sarah’s Secret (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}). Trainer Simon Callaghan and jockey Flavien Prat strike with over 40% when combining on the dirt. Don Alberto hombred Storie Blue (EmpireMaker) debuts for trainer Bob Baffert off a steady string of works, including a four-furlong move in :48.40 two back at Santa Anita Nov. 7 (Video XBTV). Drayden Van Dyke has the mount. The filly is out of Spare Change (Bernardini), a daughter of three-time Grade I winner Finder’s Fee (Storm Cat). TJCIS PPs

OXO Equine’s Orsay (AmericanPharoah) stretches out and tries turf for the first time after weakening late to be third in her career bow going 6 1/2 furlongs at Belmont Oct. 20. Out of dual Grade I winner Life at Ten (Malibu Moon), the Chad Brown trainee realized a $1.2 million final bid at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Also returning is Lost Ticket (More Than Ready), a $400,000 yearling buy in Saratoga last season. The Bill Mott-trained filly finished third while tackling this distance in her debut at Belmont Oct. 24. Mott also saddles firster Empress Amelia (EmpireMaker). Dam Amelia (Dixieland Band) is already responsible for graded winners Assateague, Rainha da Bateria, and Kindergarten Kid, in addition to GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner up He’s Had Enough.
