Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted November 29, 2019 Journalists Share Posted November 29, 2019 Sent off the third choice in the wagering at a shade below 5-1, Mathis Stable’s BELLERA (f, 3, Bernardini-Habiboo, by Unbridled’s Song) sat a perfect stalking trip outside of second choice Gold Standard (Medaglia d’Oro), wrested command from that one a furlong from home and held off a belated rally from favored ‘TDN Rising Star’ Arrifana (Curlin) to take Friday’s GIII Comely S. at Aqueduct. Away in good order from gate three, Bellera was content to cede the early advantage to Gold Standard, the recent runner-up in the GIII Remington Park Oaks. Traveling in the three path down the backstretch, the $90,000 Keeneland September graduate was full of run entering the stretch and responded when asked to win her race. Arrifana raced just behind the leaders and was switched out with every conceivable chance at the three-sixteenths, but she could only plug on into second at one pace late. Bellera, who most recently unseated her rider and ran loose in the GIII Turnback the Alarm S. Nov. 2, is the 72nd black-type winner and 45th graded winner for her sire and is bred on the same cross as Group 1 winner Capezzano and other graded winners Hemsworth and Shagaf. A half-sister to GSW Life Imitates Art (More Than Ready) and to the dam of GSW Beyond Blame (Blame), Bellera descends from the female family of Darley stallion Street Boss.
