Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale Tuesday

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed Sale, featuring the dispersal of Joseph Besecker’s racing and breeding stock, will be held Tuesday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium.   The auction begins with 230 catalogued weanlings, yearlings and broodmares and is followed by a further 137 horses of racing age.

“This an exciting sale from a number of perspectives, including a strong nucleus of in-foal mares and good sire power among the weanlings,” said Midlantic Director of Sales Paget Bennett.

The December sale will offer a racing age section for the third time this year.

“There are a number of exciting entries in here, particularly from the dispersal of Joseph Besecker,” Bennett said. “Racing stables looking to restock for 2020 will find tremendous opportunities here.”

The Besecker dispersal, which includes over 100 head, is divided between three consignors, with the majority being offered through the Northview Stallion Station consignment.

“We have approximately half the sale and I don’t know of that ever being done at a one-day sale before,” said Northview’s David Wade.

The dispersal received a timely update when Laddie Liam (Golden Lad) scored a 4 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s Maryland Juvenile Futurity (video). The 2-year-old, who has now won three of five starts and earned $128,556, was purchased for $14,500 out of last year’s Midlantic December sale.

Wade agreed the dispersal should help attract a deeper buying bench to the Midlantic auction, which last year saw 201 horses sell for $1,911,100 and an average of $9,508.

“I think we are going to have some buyers come in that don’t normally attend this sale, it’s normally just a local sale,” Wade said. “I’ve already heard from people from out of town. I heard from a man from California who is flying out to attend the sale. And I’m sure there will be a lot of telephone bidding as well.”

In addition to Northerview Stallion Station, Clovis Crane’s Crane Thoroughbred Services will offer five yearlings and two horses of racing age for the dispersal and Greenmount Farm will offer two weanlings and two broodmares.

Northview offered the top-priced lot at last year’s Midlantic December sale, with LEB going to $87,000 to acquire a weanling by Peace and Justice.

Bidding at the one-session sale begins at 10 a.m.
