Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted December 28, 2019 Journalists Share Posted December 28, 2019 Fox Hill Farms’ Omaha Beach (c, 3, War Front–Charming, by Seeking the Gold), the 2-5 favorite, strode to an effortless four-length victory in the GI Malibu S. Saturday at Santa Anita. Longshot Much Better (Pioneerof the Nile) dragged jockey Joe Talamo to the lead and that pair was some four lengths in front through a quarter in :22.43. His advantage was short-lived and it was Omaha Beach cruising up four wide who took the lead after a half in :45.02. The strapping dark bay was never asked for run as he strode clear down the lane. He completed the seven furlongs in 1:22.33. Roadster (Quality Road) was second and Manny Wah (Will Take Charge) was third. The win gave jockey Mike Smith his second Grade I of the afternoon and his record-setting 217th lifetime top-level victory. Smith tied Jerry Bailey for the record with his win two races earlier in the GI La Brea S. Omaha Beach, winner of the GI Arkansas Derby in April, was forced to the sidelines for much of the year, but he returned to win the Oct. 5 GI Santa Anita Sprint Championship. He closed to be second in the Nov. 2 GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile last time out. Lifetime Record: 10-5-4-1. O-Fox Hill Farms. B-Charming Syndicate (Ky). T-Richard Mandella.
