Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted January 9, 2020 Journalists Share Posted January 9, 2020 The 2019 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Exhilarates is chasing a rich Gold Coast double. The changing pattern of the Magic Millions yearling sales has been highlighted by four of the first five from last year’s 2YO Classic running in the 3YO Guineas. Last year’s 2YO Classic trifecta – Exhilarates, Dubious and Hightail – will be joined by fifth-placed Oh Five Glory. It is the first time the Classic trifecta has backed up in the Guineas. For many years Magic Millions buyers looked for early comers to run only in the 2YO Classic. However, since the Guineas was elevated to equal prize money with the Classic at $2 million, many of the big stables try to source horses who can start in both races. No horse has won both the Classic and Guineas but more have tried in the past decade. The Gai Waterhouse-trained Sweet Idea finished second in the 2013 Classic and won the 2014 Guineas. Another Waterhouse horse in Dreifontein won the 2012 Classic and was third in the 2013 Guineas. Trainer Tony Gollan’s filly Outback Barbie ran third in both the Classic (2018) and Guineas (2019).
