Apprentice Adin Thompson has won a Birdsville Cup and is now focused on Qld metropolitan racing.

Emerging Queensland apprentice Adin Thompson has his strongest book of rides to date as he strives for his first metropolitan Saturday win at Eagle Farm.

Thompson was the leading apprentice in Queensland last season and he rode the country circuit with the iconic Birdsville Cup among his victories.

His results have continued this season as he concentrates on metropolitan and provincial racing.

He has ridden four metropolitan winners, all of them achieved at midweek meetings.

Thompson is developing a reputation for winning on horses at double-figure odds with his four winners in the past fortnight – Swing Shift ($17) Oscar’s Lot ($21), Beans ‘N’ Rice ($31) and Hold On ($15) – a bonanza for bookmakers.

He has eight rides including several good chances on Saturday including Uncle Frank (2yo), Deep Melody (Plate), Prioritise (Mt Franklin Hcp) Capital Gain (Cascade Hcp), and The Kingdom (Grinders Hcp).

Uncle Frank, who won at Toowoomba by nine lengths at his last start, and Deep Melody, the winner of his past two starts, are both trained by Steve Kirkwood who has been a Thompson supporter on the provincial circuit.

Thompson will also ride filly Oh Five Glory in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Fillies race for his masters, Peter and Will Hulbert.

“I would love to give Adin his first Saturday metro win but we just can’t get a decent barrier for Oh Five Glory who is off the track again (13),” Peter Hulbert said.

“If she can get into a nice spot there is no reason she can’t beat these.

“It would be special if Adin’s first Saturday metro was for us but I am sure there will be plenty of winners to come.”

Hulbert said Thompson had all the attributes to go a long way in racing.

“He is a genuine horseman, he can ride at 51 kilos and he is a hard worker,” Hulbert said.
