Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted February 6, 2020 Journalists Share Posted February 6, 2020 Godolphin’s Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), trying dirt for the first time in the 1900-metre G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2, answered that question emphatically, stalking several lengths off the pace before putting away his rivals when called upon by about 3 ½ lengths at Meydan on Thursday. Military Law (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) completed the exacta, ahead of Gronkowski (Lonhro {Aus}). That GI Belmont S. runner-up sat farther back in the field, but was trapped wide for the majority and did well to rally for show. Part of the early pace discussion from the bell, Christophe Soumillon settled his mount in a perfect position in third just off the pace set by the dueling leaders. Roman Rosso (Arg) (Roman Ruler) gained a narrow advantage on the backstretch and held on grimly as the field entered the far turn. Benbatl was forced to make his bid three deep, forged to the front just inside the final 400 metres and fended off all comers for the win. The Saeed bin Suroor trainee, a MG1SW in Germany, Australia and the UAE, had opened his season with a 4 3/4-length victory in the local G2 Singspiel S. over 1800metres on grass on Jan. 9. It was revealed on Wednesday that the 6-year-old and Gronkowski both had entries in the $20-million Saudi Cup on Feb. 29. Lifetime Record: 20-10-3-1. O-Godolphin. B-Darley (GB). T-Saeed bin Suroor.
