Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted February 8, 2020 Journalists Share Posted February 8, 2020 SOLE VOLANTE (g, 3, Karakontie {Jpn}-Light Blow, by Kingmambo) came flying late to upset heavily favored Independence Hall (Constitution) in the GIII Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa Bay Downs Saturday. Away well form post two, the $20,000 OBSAPR buy ran second last early, well back off the loose on the lead duo of Premier Star (Tapiture) and Chapalu (Flatter), who were tracked intently by Independence Hall. The chalk swept to the front after a half in :46.52 with the rest of the pack closing in behind him. Independence Hall tried to roll clear, but Sole Volante was ranging up hot on his heels and overtook his favored foe in the final furlong, cruising clear for a 2 1/2-length success. Independence Hall held second and Ajaweed (Into Mischief) rallied from last to complete the trifecta. A debut winner on turf at Gulfstream West Oct. 12, Sole Volante followed suit with a win in the grassy Puplit S. in Hallandale Nov. 30 and rallied to be third when trying dirt for the first time in the Mucho Macho Man S. at Gulfstream Jan. 4.
