Silver Prospector Gets the Trip, Rallies to Take Southwest

SILVER PROSPECTOR (c, 3, Declaration of War–Tap Softly, by Tapit) worked out a dream trip under Ricardo Santana, Jr. and parlayed it into a victory in the GIII Southwest S. Monday at Oaklawn, the colt’s second graded stakes victory in his last three outings. Breaking his maiden fourth out and first time on dirt Oct. 13 at Keeneland, the gray was third in the Street Sense S. two weeks later at Churchill before upsetting Tiz the Law (Constitution) in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. under the lights in Louisville Nov. 30. Too far back behind a soft pace when finishing a non-threatening fourth in the local Smarty Jones S. Jan. 24, he was given a 47-10 chance at redemption here and broke a half-step slowly. Maneuvering his way into midpack as Wells Bayou (Lookin At Lucky) won an early pace scramble to show the way through sharp fractions of :22.89 and :46.60, Silver Prospector looked loaded for bear at the rail on the far turn while patiently handled. Splitting the pacesetter and favored Answer In (Dialed In) at the top of the lane, he took charge entering the furlong grounds and appeared poised to run away with it, but drifted out steadily as Wells Bayou showed his gameness to fight back. Ultimately having a bit more in reserve, however, Silver Prospector straightened enough to beat back the pacesetter by three-quarters of a length in 1:43.01.
