Kodiac Gelding Upsets Deirdre In Saudi Arabia

Port Lions (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) was the second-longest shot on the board at 40-1 and missed the break badly, but he made up for lost time in the closing stages of the Mohamed Yousuf Naghi Motors Cup, overhauling the heavy favourite Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) to win the opening contest on the Saudi Cup card by a head. The gelded bay, a recent recruit by Fawzi Nass, traveled last early after his poor start. Deirdre, who had stalked the pace, was putting in a closing kick down the middle of the track but Port Lions’s was simply stronger, and he overhauled her in the shadow of the wire to post a massive upset.
