Thank you, Mark Casse. It’s great when a person of stature and respect in this business takes a stand against a problem infecting our sport. Clenbuterol has long been flying under the radar in its use in Thoroughbreds of all ages. To my understanding, it is not a critical medication and should be abolished.

Mark’s comments say it all for the racing side. As for its use in sales prep for weanlings and yearlings, there is absolutely no place for it. I have heard the stories of people using and some abusing it in sales prep. I always hoped the use of clenbuterol was the exception, not the rule. But it simply should be outlawed, for the safety of the animal and to maintain a level playing field for seller and buyer.

The sales companies have outlawed its use in 2-year-olds and older. There is absolutely no earthly reason, unless perhaps prescribed in cases of life and death, for clenbuterol to be used in young horses, so let’s outlaw it for all horses via the sales conditions this year. Thank you Mark for putting this on the table.
