Following the late scratch of the defending Big ‘Cap winner Gift Box (Twirling Candy), Hronis and Sadler lit up the tote board at 9-1 with Combatant (r, 5, Scat Daddy–Border Dispute, by Boundary) for an unprecedented three peat in the prestigious event (Accelerate ’18; Gift Box ’19). Third while making his debut for these connections in the local GII San Pasqual S. Feb. 1, the $220,000 KEENOV purchase sat just behind the leaders on the outside in fourth through a half mile in :47.87. The 2018 GIII Southwest S. runner-up and GII Rebel S. third-place finisher began to roll with a three-wide blitz off the turn for home and came charging down the center of the course to record a quarter-length victory for his first career stakes victory.
