WELLS BAYOU (c, 3, Lookin At Lucky–Whispering Angel, by Hard Spun) took the field wire-to-wire to take the $1-million GII Louisiana Derby Saturday at Fair Grounds. Seizing the early advantage, the bay coasted along through a :23.56 first quarter and :48 flat half-mile. Longshot NY Traffic (Cross Traffic) turned up the pressure a little bit through three-quarters in 1:12.42, but Wells Bayou kept on finding in the lane, cruising clear of the foe to score by two lengths. A debut winner sprinting in the slop at Keeneland Oct. 26, Wells Bayou was off the board next out at Churchill Nov. 30 and won next out at Oaklawn Jan. 26. He entered off a runner-up effort in Oaklawn’s GIII Southwest S Feb. 17. Lifetime Record: 5-3-1-0.
