Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted May 4, 2020 Journalists Share Posted May 4, 2020 Can Zed Em overcome 73kg to make it back-to-back wins in the Grand Annual Steeplechase? There’ll be no crowds, no third day and no racing to the top of the hill to watch the Grand Annual this year, but we can rest assured Ric McIntosh will bring the feeling of being at the ‘Bool to our lounge rooms. This year’s event will see 17 races over just two days: Tuesday, May 5 and Wednesday, May 6. All jumps races will take place on Day 1, highlighted by the Brierly Steeplechase (3450m) and the Grand Annual (5500m). The flat races on Day 2 will feature two Listed events, the Wangoom Handicap (1200m) and the Warrnambool Cup (2350m). As usual, the Warrnambool May Carnival will be raced on a rain-affected track, which is expected to be a Soft 7. Best bets for Warrnambool Carnival Day 1 A bumper eight-race card is kicked off by three maiden hurdles, with the first at 11:45am AEST. The day is highlighted by Zed Em, which is facing a monster task with 73kg in an attempt to make it back-to-back Grand Annuals. His main rivals are Gold Medals and Jericho Cup winner Ablaze in Australia’s premier steeplechase event. Race 3 – Maiden Hurdle 3200mSir Isaac Newton $3 with Ladbrokes An ex-Macedon Lodge galloper brings superior flat form into the 3200m Carlton Draught Maiden Hurdle, coming from some of Australia’s feature Group 1 staying tests just a few seasons ago. Now with the Maher and Eustace stable, Sir Isaac Newton has had a relatively quiet preparation with just one race for a third-place finish over the obstacles a little over two weeks ago. He has since trialled very well at Warrnambool and with leading jumps jockey Steven Pateman on, we think he is one of the better bets of the day. warrnambool – Race 3 carlton draught mdn hrdl Class: mdn hurdl 1:05pm Track Conditions: TBA carlton draught mdn hrdl 3200m 3200m Tuesday 1:05pm win place Best odds Fixed Fixed Fixed Fixed Fixed jockey 1 Britannicus Ronan Short 68.5 13 3.2 13bet –bet – bet –bet 12bet –bet 12bet –bet 12bet 3.2bet jockey 2 Harvard Clayton Douglas 68.5 7 2.3 7bet –bet – bet –bet 6.5bet –bet 7bet –bet 7bet 2.3bet jockey 3 Inayforhay Lee Horner 68.5 3.1 1.4 2.9bet –bet – bet –bet 3bet –bet 3.1bet –bet 3bet 1.4bet jockey 4 Mazaz Darryl Horner (Jnr) 68.5 9.5 2.6 9bet –bet – bet –bet 9.5bet –bet 8.5bet –bet 9bet 2.6bet jockey 5 Salt Of The Earth Tom Ryan 68.5 23 4.8 21bet –bet – bet –bet 21bet –bet 23bet –bet 21bet 4.8bet jockey 6 Sir Isaac Newton Steven Pateman 68.5 3.1 1.4 3.1bet –bet – bet –bet 3bet –bet 2.9bet –bet 3bet 1.4bet jockey 7 Steam Roller Thomas Sadler 68.5 10 2.7 9.5bet –bet – bet –bet 9.5bet –bet 10bet –bet 9.5bet 2.7bet jockey 8 The Ultimatum Arron Lynch 68.5 51 8.5 51bet –bet – bet –bet 41bet –bet 51bet –bet 51bet 8.5bet jockey 9 Yulong Emperor Shane Jackson 68.5 0 0 –bet –bet – bet –bet –bet –bet –bet –bet –bet –bet jockey 10 Valhalla Princess Dylan Mc Donagh 66.5 9 2.5 8bet –bet – bet –bet 8.5bet –bet 9bet –bet 8.5bet 2.5bet Race 6 – Brierly Steeplechase 3450mSlowpoke Rodriguez $3.20 at Neds Slowpoke Rodriguez has been knocking on the door every race this prep with flashing late runs. Paddy Payne typically places his horses very well over the Warrnambool Carnival and we expect this to be no different. He maps to settle towards the back of the field, so barrier 10 shouldn’t be an issue for him as Lee Horner can just cut across the back of the field and pick them off late. The wet track will suit him down to the ground and we think that he can add a fourth win over the jumps to his record here in the Brierly. warrnambool – Race 6 scotty stewart brierly stpl Class: steeple 3:05pm Track Conditions: TBA scotty stewart brierly stp 3450m 3450m Tuesday 3:05pm win place Best odds Fixed Fixed Fixed Fixed Fixed jockey 1 Searaven Ronan Short 70.0 13 3.2 13bet –bet – bet –bet 12bet –bet 13bet –bet 12bet 3.2bet jockey 2 Slowpoke Rodriguez Lee Horner 69.5 3.4 1.5 2.9bet –bet – bet –bet 3.3bet –bet 3.2bet –bet 3.4bet 1.5bet jockey 3 I’ll’ava’alf Shane Jackson 69.0 21 4.6 21bet –bet – bet –bet 19bet –bet 19bet –bet 19bet 4.6bet jockey 4 Euroman Steven Pateman 68.0 4.2 1.7 4bet –bet – bet –bet 4bet –bet 4bet –bet 4.2bet 1.7bet jockey 5 Excellent Rhythm Tony Ihaka 68.0 41 7.5 41bet –bet – bet –bet 34bet –bet 41bet –bet 41bet 7.5bet jockey 6 Lucques Arron Lynch 67.5 21 4.8 21bet –bet – bet –bet 20bet –bet 21bet –bet 20bet 4.8bet jockey 7 Zataglio Darryl Horner (Jnr) 67.0 35 7 34bet –bet – bet –bet 34bet –bet 35bet –bet 34bet 7bet jockey 8 The Dominator Thomas Sadler 66.5 4.6 1.7 4.6bet –bet – bet –bet 4.6bet –bet 4.6bet –bet 4.2bet 1.7bet jockey 9 Getting Leggie Clayton Douglas 66.0 13 3.2 13bet –bet – bet –bet 12bet –bet 13bet –bet 12bet 3.2bet jockey 10 He’s A Genius Tom Ryan 66.0 5.5 2 5.5bet –bet – bet –bet 5.5bet –bet 5.5bet –bet 5.5bet 2bet Race 7 – Grand Annual Steeplechase 5500mGold Medals $4.20 with Sportsbet The Grand Annual Steeplechase is the feature race of the Warrnambool Carnival with 33 obstacles over 5500m. This year’s edition sees the quinella of the last two editions back to fight it out again with Zed Em and Gold Medals. The latter horse is 4kg better off at the weights, which will prove crucial by the business end. The favourite, Ablaze, is the up and comer over the obstacles and certainly gets in well at the weights, but we are with Simon Wilde’s 2018 winner here. His trial last week was superb, while the weight swing on Zed Em and the class edge over Ablaze should make a world of difference. warrnambool – Race 7 waterfront by l living stpl Class: steeple 3:45pm Track Conditions: TBA waterfront by l living stp 5500m 5500m Tuesday 3:45pm win place Best odds Fixed Fixed Fixed Fixed Fixed jockey 1 Zed Em Steven Pateman 73.0 0 0 – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet jockey 2 Gold Medals Clayton Douglas 69.5 0 0 – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet jockey 3 Bit Of A Lad Thomas Sadler 68.0 0 0 – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet jockey 4 Police Camp Tom Ryan 66.0 0 0 – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet jockey 5 Ablaze Shane Jackson 66.0 0 0 – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet jockey 6 Fulmineus Bradley Thomas-Rantall 66.0 0 0 – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet jockey 7 Undergroundfighter Lee Horner 66.0 0 0 – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet jockey 8 Bold Bandit Ronan Short 66.0 0 0 – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet – bet –bet The post Warrnambool Carnival Day 1 betting tips – Tuesday, 5 May 2020 appeared first on BOAY Racing News.
