Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted June 7, 2020 Journalists Share Posted June 7, 2020 McKinzie (h, 5, Street Sense–Runway Model, by Petionville) shook off the rust following an unsuccessful trip to Saudi Arabia in February with an effortless victory in the GII Triple Bend H. at Santa Anita Sunday. Sent off the 1-2 favorite, the multiple Grade I winner raced in the clear just off of his pacesetting stablemate Ax Man (Misremembered) who took the field through fractions of :23.56 and :46.13. McKinzie ranged up three wide nearing the stretch under a motionless Mike Smith. He grabbed command in upper stretch, turned back Fashionably Fast (Lucky Pulpit) and sailed clear to a two-length victory. Dark Vader (Tale of Ekati) was third. The time for the seven furlongs was 1:22.56. “He had me in the game early,” Smith said of the winner. “He was ready to pounce at any time. He’s a lot of fun to ride. He’s not just extremely talented, but he’s a thinker too.” McKinzie, winner of last year’s GI Whitney H. and second in the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic, was making his first start since finishing 11th in the inaugural Saudi Cup Feb. 29. Lifetime Record: 16-8-6-0. O-Watson, Pegram and Weitman. B-Summer Wind Farm (Ky). T-Bob Baffert.
