Wells Bayou Off Derby Trail With Bone Bruising

On the same day the GI Kentucky Derby lost top contender Maxfield (Street Sense) to a condylar fracture, another hopeful, Wells Bayou (Lookin At Lucky), was also declared from the Derby trail with bone bruising, according to trainer Brad Cox. The story was first reported by Daily Racing Form.

“We sent him over to the clinic, I just wasn’t happy with the way he was moving the past week,” Cox told TDN. “We sent him for a bone scan and he has some bone bruising. Obviously it’s a step back and unfortunate with the timing, but it is what it is. The horse comes first. He’s gonna need time and the Derby’s three months away, so we’re out.”

Owned by Clint and Lance Gasaway, Madaket Stables and Wonder Stables, Wells Bayou won two of three to start his career and was second after setting a fast pace in the GIII Southwest S. Feb. 17 at Oaklawn before scoring a frontrunning success in the GII Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby Mar. 21 at Fair Grounds. The $105,000 OBS March purchase was last seen running fifth in the GI Arkansas Derby back in Hot Springs May 2.
