Eight Post It ‘Tiz’ for Belmont Stakes

ELMONT, NY — Led by imposing GI Curlin Florida Derby winner Tiz the Law (Constitution), a field of 10 has been drawn for Saturday’s shortened 152nd renewal of the GI Belmont S.

Tiz the Law, also an authoritative winner of last term’s GI Champagne S. at Belmont, will break from post eight under regular rider Manny Franco in the first leg of the reshuffled Triple Crown going 1 1/8 miles. The 6-5 morning-line favorite is trained by Barclay Tagg for Sackatoga Stable.

“He does everything you ask him to, he’s very happy and content,” Tagg, sporting a facial covering, said before a small group of socially distanced media assembled in the Belmont Café Wednesday afternoon. “He likes this track, so I’m glad to be back here.”

Sole Volante (Karakontie {Jpn}), second as the favorite in the GII Tampa Bay Derby, returns on quick notice following a come-from-behind optional claiming tally going a one-turn mile at Gulfstream June 10.

Max Player (Honor Code) handled his first test versus winners with aplomb, capturing the GIII Withers S. when last seen at the Big A Feb. 1.

Three-time Belmont S. winning trainer Todd Pletcher will tighten the girth on both Dr Post (Quality Road) and Farmington Road (Quality Road). The lightly raced Dr Post was a tenacious winner of the Unbridled S. at Gulfstream Apr. 25 while Farmington Road enters off a fourth-place finish behind Nadal (Blame) in the GI Arkansas Derby.
