TOM’S D’ETAT (7, h, Smart Strike–Julia Tuttle, by Giant’s Causeway) came from just off the pace to win Churchill’s GII Stephen Foster S., a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re in’ for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Allowing longshot Pirate’s Punch (Shanghai Bobby) to dictate terms through initial fractions of :23.89 and :48.15, the 7-year-old overtook the pacesetter on the far turn following six furlongs in 1:11.67. Two lengths in front turning for home, the 6-5 choice continued to draw clear late, crossing the wire four lengths ahead of By My Standard (Goldencents). The final time of 1:47.30 was the second fastest time for the Stephen Foster. Lifetime Record: 18-11-2-1, $1,626,572. O-GMB Racing; B-SF Bloodstock LLC; T-Al Stall Jr.
